UNICEF warns of 'imminent explosion' in children's malnutrition deaths in Gaza – Middle East Monitor

Imagine a child so hungry their body starts to waste away. This isn't a scene from a history book; it's the horrifying reality for 1 in 6 children under 2 in Gaza. A new report by the Global Nutrition Cluster paints a grim picture: malnutrition is exploding due to the ongoing conflict.

The North Has It Worst

The situation is especially dire in Northern Gaza, which has been cut off from aid for weeks. Here, 15.6% of young children are acutely malnourished. This means their bodies are struggling to fight off infections and grow properly. Nearly 3% suffer from the most severe form, putting them at risk of death without immediate treatment.

Even in areas receiving aid, the situation is critical. In Rafah, 5% of young children are acutely malnourished. This shows that aid makes a difference, but it's not reaching everyone who needs it desperately.

A Perfect Storm of Hunger and Disease

The lack of food creates a vicious cycle. 90% of children under 2 and 95% of pregnant women face severe food poverty. This means they're not getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy. On top of that, 95% of households are limiting meals with many families forced to eat just one meal a day.

Making matters worse, over 95% of households have limited access to clean water. This essential resource is crucial for hygiene and cooking nutritious food. The lack of clean water combined with poor nutrition fuels the spread of diseases. A staggering 90% of children under 5 have at least one infectious disease, with a 23-fold increase in diarrhea compared to last year.

A Call to Action

This crisis is preventable. UNICEF, WFP, and WHO are calling for:

  • Safe and unrestricted access to deliver critical aid across Gaza.
  • Nutritious food, essential supplies, and healthcare for malnourished children and women.
  • Protection of hospitals and healthcare workers so they can continue treating the sick.
  • An immediate ceasefire to give Gaza a chance to heal.
