Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unique challenges for pregnant women, potentially impacting their mental health. This study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on maternal mental health outcomes during pregnancy and postpartum.

Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted among 200 pregnant females (100 vaccinated, 100 unvaccinated) who delivered at a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Vaccination status and mental health outcomes were assessed using validated screening tools for anxiety and depression.

Results: Vaccinated women reported lower rates of anxiety (15% vs 25%, p=0.03) and depression (12% vs 22%, p=0.04) compared to unvaccinated women. Multivariate analysis showed vaccination was independently associated with reduced odds of anxiety (aOR 0.62, 95% CI 0.41-0.94) and depression (aOR 0.58, 95% CI 0.38-0.89) after adjusting for confounders.

Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy appears to have a positive impact on maternal mental health outcomes. These findings support the importance of vaccination in promoting overall maternal wellbeing during the pandemic.
